The GParted project provides a live operating system including GParted which can be written to a Live CD, a Live USB and other media. [8] The operating system is based on Debian. GParted is also available on other Linux live CDs, including recent versions of Puppy, Knoppix, SystemRescueCd [9] and Parted Magic.
The live cd iso file being installed needs to match the system being used; for 64-bit x86-64 processors amd64 is used, for 32-bit IA-32 processors i686 is used. [9] The supported architecture is listed at the end of the iso filename. The CD can also boot from a customized DVD which has almost 4.6 GB of free space for backed-up files.
Besides the Linux distributions designed for general-purpose use on desktops and servers, distributions may be specialized for different purposes including computer architecture support, embedded systems, stability, security, localization to a specific region or language, targeting of specific user groups, support for real-time applications, or commitment to a given desktop environment.

AMD64 (also variously referred to by AMD in their literature and documentation as “AMD 64-bit Technology” and “AMD x86-64 Architecture”) was created as an alternative to the radically different IA-64 architecture designed by Intel and Hewlett-Packard, which was backward-incompatible with IA-32, the 32-bit version of the x86 architecture.
GParted [citation needed] and Parted Magic both include hdparm. [4] Changing hardware parameters from suboptimal conservative defaults to their optimal settings can improve performance greatly. For example, turning on DMA can, in some instances, double or triple data throughput.
