It is located at the confluence of the navigable Fox River and Illinois River , the latter being a conduit for river barges and connects Lake Michigan at Chicago , to the Mississippi River , and North America's 25,000 mile river system.
The population was 285 at the 2010 census, down from 310 in 2000. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Just outside of McNabb is the Clear Creek Meeting House, one of the few surviving western Quaker meeting houses. The Meeting House once hosted local abolitionists, such as Benjamin Lundy.

The district includes 195 buildings and structures, most of them commercial buildings, spread out over 26 city blocks. The oldest buildings in the district, located near the Illinois and Fox rivers, were built in the 1830s.
