Wayne County was established by the General Assembly in early 1819, and five men were appointed commissioners to fix the location of the county seat. [ 1 ] : 47 Before long, a log building was constructed on the public square in Fairfield, but it remained only a short while: county officials arranged for its replacement in 1836.
