The WCML is noted for the diversity of branches served between the London and Glasgow main line. The adjacent diagram deals with the very complex network of lines in the West Midlands that link the old route via Birmingham with the new WCML route via the Trent Valley (i.e. 1830s versus 1840s).
The West Coast Main Line is a major trunk railway in the United Kingdom, linking London with Glasgow. The Watford DC lines are intricately linked with the southern part of the WCML and are also shown in full. A detailed diagram of the line is housed on this page for technical reasons. Note that some complex areas have been simplified for clarity.
The line from London to the Channel Tunnel is the only line designated 'high speed', although the other main routes also operate limited-stop express services. The bulk of the secondary network is concentrated in London and the surrounding East and South East regions; an area marketed by National Rail as London and the South East .
Stations are planned for Old Oak Common in northwest London, Birmingham Interchange, near Solihull, and Birmingham city centre. The trains are being designed to reach a maximum speed of 360 km/h (220 mph) when operating on HS2 track, dropping to 201 km/h (125 mph) on conventional track.

It was rejected in 2007 by the UK government, in favour of conventional high-speed rail.

Virgin Trains use the line to run services to England (to London and Birmingham). CrossCountry trains operate services from Glasgow to Edinburgh for destinations to the southcoast. First ScotRail operate services to/from North Berwick on the line. Only a few services continue from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central from the coastal town.
As of December 2024, Glasgow Central is served by five train-operating companies. ScotRail uses both the high level and low level platforms, all other operators use only the high level.
