In the 1950s, the southwest side of Chicago needed a Catholic girls' school to serve a fast-growing population. In 1956 "the Academy" relocated once again. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and St. Xavier College opened in the fall of 1956 to serve secondary and post secondary women students respectively.
Opened in 1971, The school is named for slain leader of the civil rights movement, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968). Operated by the Chicago Public Schools district, King is one of the district's ten selective enrollment schools, which means that its students must apply for acceptance, based on academic achievement and test scores.
Hancock opened as an elementary school in 1999 at 4034 W. 56th Street in the West Elsdon neighborhood and was converted into a high school in 2002. The school was renamed Hancock College Prep HS and moved to a brand new building located at 5437 W. 64th Place in the Clearing neighborhood, Hancock's current school building was completed in 2021 and the ribbon cutting ceremony was on August 27, 2021.
