KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian King Sultan Muhammad V abdicated on Sunday in an unexpected move, after just two years on the throne.
In an unprecedented move, Sultan Muhammad V became the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong to abdicate from the throne, effective 6 January 2019 while his term was to end on 12 December 2021. [1] This followed a leave of absence from his position following rumours that he had married a former Russian beauty queen.

He was elected earlier by the Malay Rulers in the 251st Special Meeting of Conference of Rulers which was held at Istana Negara on 24 January 2019.
