Sharp Memorial Hospital is a hospital in San Diego, California. Opened in 1955, Sharp Memorial is Sharp HealthCare's largest hospital and the system's only designated Level II trauma center. [1] Located in Serra Mesa, the hospital has 656 beds, [2] including 48 for intensive-care services.
The first Sharp hospital opened in 1955, as Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital, a nonprofit facility in San Diego. Funding for the facility began in 1950, with a donation of $500,000 from a local rancher and radio communications pioneer, Thomas E. Sharp.

In 1992, Sharp Mary Birch opened as the largest and most extensive freestanding center for women's health in Southern California. [1] In December 2018, the world's smallest surviving baby was born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. Born at only 8.6 ounces (245 grams), "Saybie" weighed only as much as a large apple.
The eleven-story, 623-bed Hillcrest hospital opened in 1963, and control was transferred to UCSD in 1966 for an initial lease payment of $350,000 a year. [3] Over the next fifteen years, the renamed University Hospital expanded its services rapidly.
