Crater Lake actually started as a mountain, Mount Mazama. A volcanic eruption roughly 7,700 years ago caused the mountain to collapse inward over time, forming a volcanic crater, the park says.
Although snow covers Crater Lake National Park for eight months of the year (average annual snowfall is 463 inches (1,180 cm)), the lake rarely freezes over due, in part, to a relatively mild onshore flow from the Pacific Ocean. The last recorded year in which the lake froze over was in 1949, a very long, cold winter.
Crater Lake Institute Director and limnologist Owen Hoffman states that "Crater Lake is the deepest, when compared on the basis of average depth among lakes whose basins are entirely above sea level. The average depths of Lakes Baikal and Tanganyika are deeper than Crater Lake; however, both have basins that extend below sea level." [20] [22]
Up around Lake Helen, at 8,200 ft (2,499 m) the snowfall is around 600–700 in (1,520–1,780 cm), making it probably the snowiest place in California. In addition, Lake Helen gets more average snow accumulation than any other recording station located near a volcano in the Cascade range, with a maximum of 178 in (450 cm). [25]
The oral history of the Klamath indigenous people describes the eruption of a volcano and subsequent creation of Crater Lake in Oregon, events that geologists date to almost 8,000 years ago.
Lake-effect snow is generated from cold air moving over comparatively warmer lake waters. A shift in the direction of the wind behind the initial storm will not only generate these lake-effect ...
Little Crater Lake is considered an oddity, with earlier geologists theorizing it formed from a collapsed lava tube because of its steep and overhanging walls. [2] Later geologists believe it originated from a volcanic maar [3] or was created from block faulting. [4] Artesian water from an underground spring fills the resulting depression with ...
Clear Lake, one of California's oldest and most-visited lakes, is not so clear anymore after an algal bloom turned the water cloudy and green.. Images from NASA underscore the dramatic change in ...
