In 1994, Varg Vikernes of the one-man band Burzum was found guilty of burning Old Åsane Church and Storetveit Church in Bergen, the burning of Skjold Church in Vindafjord, and the burning of Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo. He was also charged with the burning of Fantoft Stave Church, although the jurors voted not guilty.
In January 1993 white nationalist Varg Vikernes told a Bergen journalist in an interview that he had been involved in eight church arsons. He was later convicted of three, and acquitted of the Fantoft arson. Vikernes, a neopagan expressed support for a spate of 52 recent church arsons, but later denied any personal involvement. [24]
Varg Vikernes (using his pseudonym Count Grishnackh) gave an anonymous interview to a journalist from the newspaper, in which he claimed to have burnt the churches and killed a man in Lillehammer. [33] According to Vikernes, the anonymous interview was planned by himself and Euronymous.
