Sharp Memorial Hospital is a hospital in San Diego, California. Opened in 1955, Sharp Memorial is Sharp HealthCare's largest hospital and the system's only designated Level II trauma center. [1] Located in Serra Mesa, the hospital has 656 beds, [2] including 48 for intensive-care services.

[citation needed] Sharp McDonald Center provides treatment for adults and their families. The hospital became affiliated with Sharp HealthCare in 1998 and has 17 licensed beds. [citation needed]

In 1992, Sharp Mary Birch opened as the largest and most extensive freestanding center for women's health in Southern California. [1] In December 2018, the world's smallest surviving baby was born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. Born at only 8.6 ounces (245 grams), "Saybie" weighed only as much as a large apple.
The eleven-story, 623-bed Hillcrest hospital opened in 1963, and control was transferred to UCSD in 1966 for an initial lease payment of $350,000 a year. [3] Over the next fifteen years, the renamed University Hospital expanded its services rapidly.
The campus and hospital were founded at its present location in 1876 by Dr. Benjamin Cory, the Director of Public Health. Founded as the County Hospital, it was the first organized hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. The current campus continues to sit at the very same spot where the original hospital was constructed in the 19th century.
