Blatnaya pesnya (Russian: блатная песня, IPA: [blɐtˈnajə ˈpʲesʲnʲə], "criminals' song") or blatnyak (Russian: блатняк, IPA: [blɐtʲˈnʲak]) is a genre of Russian song characterized by depictions of criminal subculture and the urban underworld which are often romanticized and have criminally-perverted humor in nature.
The song has been used during many Eastern European political campaigns and movements. Its success is partly because the lyrics can be applied to numerous causes. [2] The song was played from speakers at a barricade by civilians opposing the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt by hard-line communists; it was also played at protests during the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis. "Tachanka" (/ t ə ˈ tʃ æ ŋ k ə /; Russian: Tачанка [tɐˈtɕankə]), also known as the "Song of the Tachanka" (Песня о Тачанке), is a Soviet revolutionary song from the late interwar period, composed by Konstantin Listov and written by Mikhail Ruderman in 1937.
The Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson recorded a version of the song in 1967 under the title "Stepp, min stepp" (steppe, my steppe) on the album Jazz på ryska (Jazz in Russian). The American rock band Jefferson Airplane had an instrumental version of the song, titled "Meadowlands", on their album Volunteers (Jefferson Airplane album) (1969).
The song was intended to glorify the female partisans of the Russian Civil War. The lyrics tell how the singer met a pretty dark-skinned girl gathering grapes and tried to seduce her, but how the girl turns out to be a partisan and convinces him to join the partisans as well.
