Its history dates to 1865 (before the city and town of Norwich were consolidated), when the town of Norwich petitioned the state for permission to construct a single building to house town offices, city offices and Norwich's county court, the latter having been housed in a building recently destroyed by fire. The state authorized the work in 1869.
Instead of taking up office in the building, Carroll rented the property as a realty investment, the same way in which other prominent buildings in Downtown Norwich were constructed. [2] The building is also situated in a prominent position when viewed from Washington Square and is a notable aspect of the downtown landscape. [9]
The Greeneville section of Norwich Connecticut was named by William Greene. In 1826, Greene purchased land on both sides of the Shetucket River to develop. In 1828, he transferred the land to the Norwich Water Power Company, in which he was the largest shareholder. Norwich Water Power Company began construction on a dam in 1829.
Norwich (/ ˈ n ɔːr w ɪ tʃ / NOR-wich) (also called "The Rose of New England") is a city in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The Yantic , Shetucket , and Quinebaug Rivers flow into the city and form its harbor, from which the Thames River flows south to Long Island Sound .
The Southeastern Water Authority supplies water to participating towns within New London County and is one of only two such county-wide public water service providers in the state. Seven towns receive water service from one or more private corporations. The city of Norwich and most of the town of Groton provide for their own water service.
