Velupillai Prabhakaran was born in the northern coastal town of Valvettithurai on 26 November 1954, the youngest of four children. [ 26 ] [ 27 ] His parents, Thiruvenkadam Velupillai and Vallipuram Parvathy, belonged to the Karaiyar community.

Balachandran Prabhakaran (1 October 1996–19 May 2009) was the third child of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.. He was killed by Sri Lankan forces after surrendering during the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war in May 2009.
Established in 1972, Tamil New Tigers (TNT) was the precursor to the LTTE. After it was renamed as Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and restructured under the leadership of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the group staged low key attacks against various government targets, including policemen and local politicians. In October 2010 the charges against Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman in relation to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi were dropped after the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a report stating that the pair were dead. [18] The failure of the Sri Lankan military to produce Pottu Amman's body has fueled the belief that he survived the civil war. [19]
