A township, under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is the lowest level of municipal incorporation of government.All of Pennsylvania's communities outside of incorporated cities, boroughs, and one town have been incorporated into individual townships that serve as the legal entities providing local self-government functions.

Heidelberg Township is a township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States.The population of Heidelberg Township was 3,416 at the 2010 census. [2] It is a suburb of Allentown in the Lehigh Valley, which had a population of 861,899 and was the 68th-most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. as of the 2020 census.
In the township the population was spread out, with 35.7% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years.
The township surrounds the borough of Spartansburg, a separate municipality located northeast of the center of the township. According to the United States Census Bureau, Sparta Township has a total area of 42.0 square miles (108.8 km 2), of which 41.8 square miles (108.3 km 2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km 2), or 0.45%, is water. A shale gas well blowout occurred in the township in 2019. CNX Natural Gas Co LLC was fined $175,000 for environmental violations associated with the incident. [7] Coal mining was once a significant industry in the area. Deep mining was done underneath most of Washington Township, and strip mining took place near Beaver Run. [8]
