Ultisols occur in humid temperate or tropical regions. While the term is usually applied to the red clay soils of the Southern United States, Ultisols are also found in regions of Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. In the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB), most Ultisols are known as Acrisols and Alisols.
Ultisols are rather extensive in warm, humid regions of the US. They tend to represent rather advanced soil development, and thus are found on relatively old land surfaces. Vertisols are not extensive in the US, being confined to areas where there is a great abundance of swelling clays, e.g. montmorillonite , that cause churning of soils as a ...
Red soils include multiple soil types (e.g. ultisols, alfisols, oxisols) that are classified as red soil when they develop a distinct reddish color, which can vary from reddish brown to reddish yellow due to their high iron content. [1] In general, red soils possess some characteristics of a good growing soil.
Commonly found on unconsolidated river and beach sediments of sand and clay or volcanic ash, some have an A horizon on top of bedrock. They are 18% of soils worldwide. Gelisol – permafrost soils with permafrost within two metres of the surface or gelic materials and permafrost within one metre. They constitute 9% of soils worldwide.
It has a clay-rich subsoil. It is associated with humid, tropical climates, such as those found in Brazil, and often supports forested areas. [2] In the USDA soil taxonomy, [3] Acrisols correspond to the Humult, Udult, and Ustult suborders of the Ultisols and also to Oxisols with a kandic horizon and to some Alfisols. [4]
This is in contrast to Ultisols, which are the more highly leached forest soils having less than 35% base saturation. In eastern North America, Alfisols are commonly found in glaciated areas while Ultisols are restricted to the areas south of the limit of maximum glaciation. The fossil record of Alfisols begins in the Late Devonian.

Soils east of the AVA are almost exclusively Ultisols soils that generally have a thermic soil temperature regime and an udic soil moisture regime. Soils west of the AVA include Mollisols soils, which are found in grassland ecosystems and are not found in the AVA. Additionally, the region west of the AVA does not contain as many Ultisols soils ...
