Ray Kubly, then a senior at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, completed a project for one of his classes by analyzing the business case for selling Green County cheese via mail order.
His father made cheese, and Jacob learned cheesemaking at a factory scale. In 1872 he emigrated and in 1875 set up a cheesemaking business in Monroe.
