Solomon Laurent Juneau, or Laurent-Salomon Juneau (August 9, 1793 – November 14, 1856) was a French Canadian fur trader, land speculator, and politician who helped found the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [1] [2] [3] He was born in Repentigny, Quebec, to François and (Marie-)Thérèse Galarneau Juneau.
Charles James was the English immigrant who built Milwaukee's first frame store and a home and warehouse for Solomon Juneau.In 1839 he bought the 160-acre parcel which now holds the district and built a prominent farm there, with his house and the surrounding five acres framed in a horseshoe of evergreen trees.

Solomon Juneau was a French Canadian born in a small village near Montreal, Lower Canada on August 9, 1793. Juneau was a French trader with the American Fur Company. In 1818, the American Fur Company established a trading post in Milwaukee. Juneau decided to purchase the land between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan and named it Juneau Town.
The first buildings were shanties and log cabins, then frame buildings: houses, stores, taverns, sawmills and shops. Two cream brick houses were built in 1836, and in 1840 a 3-story brick store at the corner of Third and Juneau which no longer exists. In 1840 a bridge was built to link Juneautown and Kilbourntown at Juneau Avenue.
