Letterkenny Athletic Club was formed in 1972. It has evolved into one of the largest athletics clubs in the North-West with a current [when?] membership of over 150 juvenile and 100 senior athletes. [citation needed] LAC takes part in cross-country, road running and track and field competitions.

In the 1960s and 1970s, it was governed by USA Swimming's predecessor, the Amateur Athletic Union, as the AAU Indoor National Swimming Championships or National AAU Short Course Swimming Championships.
