After moving to Norfolk, Virginia In the mid 1940s she was nominated president of the Norfolk Council of Negro Women (NCNW). She served for 4 years before being elected to the position of president of the National NCNW in 1953. [8] She served until 1957. NCNW's first program was a community-based higher education project, which started in 1975. The organization worked with Empire State College [ 3 ] and community colleges and helped design courses for adult women, active within their communities, seeking to become better leaders through knowledge and improved skills.
