grep is a command-line utility for searching plaintext datasets for lines that match a regular expression. Its name comes from the ed command g/re/p (global regular expression search and print), which has the same effect.
He later added this capability to the Unix editor ed, which eventually led to the popular search tool grep's use of regular expressions ("grep" is a word derived from the command for regular expression searching in the ed editor: g/re/p meaning "Global search for Regular Expression and Print matching lines"). List of Unix commands; pidof — find the process ID of running programs; pkill — signal processes based on name and other attributes; ps — display the currently running processes; grep — search for lines of text that match one or many regular expressions
This is a list of POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface) commands as specified by IEEE Std 1003.1-2024, which is part of the Single UNIX Specification (SUS). These commands can be found on Unix operating systems and most Unix-like operating systems.
AWK (/ ɔː k / [4]) is a domain-specific language designed for text processing and typically used as a data extraction and reporting tool. Like sed and grep, it is a filter, [4] and it is a standard feature of most Unix-like operating systems.
This is a list of commands from the GNU Core Utilities for Unix environments. These commands can be found on Unix operating systems and most Unix-like operating systems. GNU Core Utilities include basic file, shell and text manipulation utilities. Coreutils includes all of the basic command-line tools that are expected in a POSIX system.
First appearing in Version 7 Unix, [3] sed is one of the early Unix commands built for command line processing of data files. It evolved as the natural successor to the popular grep command. [4] The original motivation was an analogue of grep (g/re/p) for substitution, hence "g/re/s". [3]
The computation of the automaton by the expression occurs often; it has been systematically used in search functions, in particular by the Unix grep command. Similarly, XML's specification also uses such constructions; for more efficiency, regular expressions of a certain kind, called deterministic expressions, have been studied. [4] [5]
