Tested the battery and get a measly 10.8 volts, so the charger is clearly not functioning properly. And now I’m worried that my brand new deep cycle that I religiously keep charged, has been sitting at under 11 volts for possibly a couple weeks since I had the boat out last. The charger is not an onboard deal, its a DieHard deal from Menards ...
That being said, “Deep Cycle” batteries are designed to handle deeper discharges better than a starting or auto batteries. For example, if a deep cycle battery is routinely taken to a depth of discharge (DOD) of 50% (12.06 volts), it will last about twice as long as one that is discharged to a DOD of 80% (11.58 volts).
July 15, 2020 at 9:37 pm #1957607. I had a pair of Cabelas Angler Advantage deep cycle batteries that came with my boat when it in 2016. I had to replace them about 3 weeks ago so they lasted 4.5 years. I’m pretty good about keeping them charged and keeping the posts clean so they served their purpose.
AGM = Absorbent Glass Mat. Since there is no free liquid and minimal gassing, AGM batteries can perform better than flooded batteries in applications where maintenance is difficult to perform. Cons: Users should take care when charging this battery as over and under charging can affect their life and performance.
The guy at the interstate battery store talked me out of a dual purpose battery and said you’re far better off with a deep cycle. A couple years later now and I finally took that advise. I haven’t drained my battery past 11.9v yet and I do a lot of trolling with my kicker and spot lock with the trolling motor. Deep cycle. Don’t think twice.
castle-rock-clown. Posts: 2596. February 9, 2022 at 9:11 pm #2098250. My sealed AGMs charge just fine off the converters/chargers in both my fish houses. I just plug the shoreline into the house to charge and maintain and on the ice my 2000 watt generator keeps them topped off while also giving 120v power. Jensen.
I have an Amped 24v trolling motor battery with Amped 24v charger. I also debated going with 2-12v in series and went with the 24v strictly off recommendation from Amped. I would contact them to chat about it, they were very responsive for me. The positives are efficiency, smaller footprint, only having 1 battery to maintain, etc.
A group 24 starting battery has about 600 CCA and deep cycle battery has about 500 CCA. Based on specs either would work just fine. A group 27 interstate deep cycle battery has 600 CCA so it is about the same starting capacity as a group 24 starting battery.
The starting battery is from 2006 and the trolling motor batteries are 2008, 2009, and 2012. There is only one higher end battery and that is a blue top Optima (2012). I use my boat at least 40 times a year and the trolling motor is used a lot. The on board charger is plugged in all the time when not on the water.
Use your 2 bank charger for them. Get a duel starting/deep cycle and a 1 bank charger for starting and other electronics. If you are going from 12 volt to 24 volt trolling motor you should replace with matched batteries ( both the same size and age). Most batteries are made by 3 company’s so you don’t have to spend $500.00 on a battery.
