There is an exception to my 155" minimum shoulder mount. Character varies in antlers on whitetails. I've seen some real cool antlers on deer that didn't meet that 155" min. The last 3 years I've been seeing a huge wide beamed spike on my trail cams every year. Trying to set up for a shot on this buck has been a failure for me.

Its also something different for the guy who has several deer on the wall already. If you go the semi sneak route look at the 6900 series. I don't usually go by any rule of thumb other than what the customer wants and where they plan on putting it once it is mounted. Semi sneaks and semi uprights are the most common poses.

If it's a heavy mount, (elk, moose...) then I use two screws side by side. Never trust your mount to a drywall hanger of any kind. It is possible to hang a mount from stone or brick by drilling a hole and then epoxying a screw into the hole, but I would use a 3" screw for such an application. The type of hanger on the mount makes a huge difference.

The "best bet" is to take it to a taxidermist for cleaning. I can clean and touch up a mount for about $50. That will clean the hair, the horns and retouch areas with the airbrush. But to do it yourself, take some mount brite and clean the hair. Careful with the ears and around the eyes which are, most likely, touched up with an airbrush.

I mount my heads the way I remember the deer when I pulled the trigger, right turn or left turn, upright, sneak, etc. I like the sneak and semi sneak mounts. the upright mounts I like the least, as most do'nt appear very natural.

closely examine the mount and look under the hair where the hair meets the skin. You might have a case of moths. They eat the protein from the base of the hair and chew the hairs off. Look for larvae, or the white lumps which are egg sacks. Prevention is to treat the mount every 6 months or so with cedar oil available from Van *****.

I'm very happy with the overall workmanship of the mount but was surprised with one detail. When I harvested the buck in early Nov. of last year, the neck was noticeably more swollen. When I got the mount back, the neck looked a lot smaller than before. This mount looks like the buck was taken early in the season and not the Rut phase.
