In our world: Pathfinder Society, or PFS, is a worldwide campaign managed and organized in affiliation with Paizo. Each area has a "lodge" and "venture captain" who works with game stores and local players to set up game nights and events.

Quick explanation- 3.0 Wizards wanted more 3rd party content- so they put the basics of their rules online for free for everyone (they kept some things like the lore and beholders and stuff like that).
