When you click on it, Wikipedia starts a new section at the bottom of a page. As discussed in Chapter 8, use this tab when starting a discussion of a new topic (rather than clicking "edit this page" or editing the existing bottom section, and adding a new heading). User preferences offer the display choice "+" or "New Section".
By default, there is no link to edit the lead section of a page, so the entire page must be edited. Lead section editing can be enabled through Preferences → Gadgets → Appearance → Add an [edit] link for the lead section of a page. You can also click "[edit]" at another section and manually change section=n in the url to section=0.

Even experienced editors make the mistake of editing the lead and adding new content and references without editing the body. If you see this happening, please fix it. The references section should reveal at least two uses of all the references used in the lead.
