The cross-section of each mullion or tracery bar was important both for the structural integrity of the window and for the visual effect. One example is the stained glass window of the doorway of the Hôtel van Eetvelde in Brussels (1895). In France, Art Nouveau stained glass was used by Alphonse Mucha to decorate the interior of the jewelry shop of Georges Fouquet. The windows were made by Léon Fargues. The decor is now found in the Carnavalet Museum.
Medieval stained glass is the colored and painted glass of medieval Europe from the 10th century to the 16th century. For much of this period stained glass windows were the major pictorial art form, particularly in northern France, Germany and England, where windows tended to be larger than in southern Europe (in Italy, for example, frescos were more common).
