The Kennebec River (Abenaki: Kinəpékʷihtəkʷ) is a 170-mile-long (270 km) [1] river within the U.S. state of Maine. It rises in Moosehead Lake in west-central Maine . The East and West Outlets join at Indian Pond and the river flows southward.
It impounds the Kennebec River at the southern end of the natural Indian Pond, about 12 miles (19 km) downstream from Moosehead Lake. [5] The concrete gravity structure is 175 feet (53 m) high and was named for Ford Harris, the chief engineer of original builders Central Maine Power. [6] The dam creates about 86 megawatts of hydroelectric power.

The western basin overflows into Outlet Stream in the town of Vassalboro. Outlet Stream flows 7 miles (11 km) north to discharge into the Sebasticook River in Winslow 1 mile (1.6 km) upstream of the Kennebec River. When the river has water, 24 commercial rafting companies take more than 750 raft passengers through the course each day. Because the river is dry most of the year, the Center, now operated by the U.S. Forest Service, also serves as a site for hiking, mountain biking, conferences, weddings, and receptions. It receives about 300,000 visitors a year.
