Sicily's rail network, which has included only standard-gauge lines since 1986, is operated entirely by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana; an exception is the 111-km narrow-gauge Catania-Randazzo-Linguaglossa-Riposto line, [1] which is operated by Ferrovia Circumetnea. As of 2018, the FS network in operation covers a length of 1369 km. [2]
The line will be completely transformed, forming a complete ring known as the Palermo Rail Ring, extending from Giachery to Notarbartolo with new stops at Porto and Malaspina Politeama-Catania. The new route will be underground. A new stop will open Lazio Libertà. This line will not get a second track.

The long term plan for the railway is for the ring to be extended south to Termini Imerese, and a railway bypass will be built at Palermo Centrale. Rail transport services on this section that connects Palermo Centrale to the Airport, will take place every 15 minutes compared to the present frequency of 30 minutes. [4]
In the 1990s, a metro-link to Palermo Notarbartolo was opened from Palermo Centrale, in Piazza Giachery. It uses the existing underground route of the old Bivio–Olivuzza–Porto railway, and touches most of the city. Currently under construction is another railway link that will connect a further big chunk of the city (the south-west).
The Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria railway, which, due to the difficult terrain of the regions crossed, required long viaducts and tunnels, like the lines in Liguria, was built between 1883 and 1895 as a single-track line, operated with steam traction, after the east coast north–south railway via Metaponto and the Ionian Railway (ferrovia Jonica, Reggio–Catanzaro–Crotone–Taranto).
