Charles F. Orvis opened a tackle shop in Manchester, Vermont, in 1856. His 1874 fly reel was described by reel historian Jim Brown as the "benchmark of American reel design," the first fully modern fly reel. The Batten Kill, Battenkill, or Battenkill River is a 59.4-mile-long (95.6 km) [1] river rising in Vermont that flows into New York and is a tributary of the Hudson River. It is the longest Hudson tributary on that river's east. As "kill" means a creek, the name "Battenkill River" is pleonastic. [2]
It chartered the Battenkill Railroad for this purpose on December 15, 1902, and consolidated that company on August 12 the following year when the 7-mile (11 km) branch opened. [5] [1] The Delaware and Hudson took an interest in the small railroad, and in 1906 bought up the Greenwich and Johnsonville's capital stock, acquiring complete control. [3]
