The Ramavataram, popularly referred to as Kamba Ramayanam, is a Tamil epic that was written by the Tamil poet Kambar during the 12th century. Based on Valmiki 's Ramayana (which is in Sanskrit ), the story describes the legend of King Rama of Ayodhya .

Kambar was a 12th-century Tamil poet who wrote Kamba Ramayanam, the life of Rama of Ayodhya. Kamba Ramayana differed on several aspects from the original version of Ramayana written by Sanskrit poet Valmiki. Kamba Ramayana emphasised Tamil culture and tradition more. He was known for popularising the Tamil epic Ramavataram (also known as Kamba Ramayanam) through his Kamban Kazhagam organization, and for initiating construction of a temple to the Tamil language in Karaikudi.
T. K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar (1882–1954) was a Tamil scholar from Tenkasi. He was one of the founding authors of Tamil renaissance movement. He had authored Tamil books and Kambar Tharum Ramayanam.
