Lumberton is a city in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. As of 2020, its population was 19,025. [5] It is the county seat of Robeson County. [6] Located in southern North Carolina's Inner Banks region, Lumberton is located on the Lumber River. It was founded in 1787 by John Willis, an officer in the American Revolution.
He then worked as the executive director of the Lumberton Housing Authority from 1976 to 1994. He served on the Lumberton City Council from 1975 to 1994, [1] and served as the first Native American mayor pro tempore of the city in 1981. [6] During his long tenure as Sheriff of Robeson County, Hubert Stone provoked the ire of the Lumbee community.
