The proposal by Friar Felipe Galindo y Chávez was reconsidered by lawyer Matías Ángel de la Mota Padilla, who, in 1750, successfully involved Guadalajara's city hall in the project. However, the need for a university in Nueva Galicia became more pressing after the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from all Spanish territories in 1767.
