The Pumas are one of the most popular clubs in Mexico and considered to be one of the Cuatro Grandes of Mexican football, alongside Cruz Azul, Guadalajara, and Club América. [7] [8] Domestically, Pumas UNAM has won 11 trophies: 7 Liga MX, 1 Copa MX, the Campeón de Campeones twice, as well as 1 Segunda División de México.
In the early years, Pumas had a long string of consecutive championships from 1933 to 1945 (including an appearance in the 1945 Sun Bowl; this was followed by the so-called "Golden Age" of 1946 to 1957. Between the years 1958 and 1969 the team consolidated its position within ONEFA, Mexico's league of American football.
The 2012–13 UNAM season was the 66th professional season of Mexico's top-flight football league. The season is split into two tournaments—the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura—each with identical formats and each contested by the same eighteen teams.
It was contested by Mexican club UNAM and Argentinian club Boca Juniors. Boca was defending their trophy and Pumas UNAM were playing in their first Copa Sudamericana finals. The first leg was played in Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico D.F. on 6 December 6, and the match was tied 1–1.
