The Rotax Type 256 is a 250 cc (15 cu in) two-stroke parallel twin-cylinder racing engine, designed, developed and produced by Rotax, between 1980 and 1998.It was primary used in kart (especially kart racing) applications, as well as motorcycle racing applications, such as competing in the 250cc class of the Grand Prix motorcycle World Championship.

Boxer crankshaft configuration. Most flat-twin engines use a boxer configuration for the crankshaft and are therefore called "boxer-twin" engines. In a boxer-twin engine, the 180° crankshaft moves the pistons in phase with each other, therefore the forces generated by one piston are cancelled out by the other, resulting in excellent primary balance.
Ram Air engine. The T250's engine was a development of the earlier T20, which had been introduced in 1966. The 180° piston ported two stroke twin was of unit construction and had alloy head and alloy barrels with cast iron liners. Bore and stroke were 54 mm × 54 mm (2.1 in × 2.1 in) and the claimed power output was 31 bhp (23 kW) @ 7,000 rpm.
