In the 19th century a small type of dog developed in the mountainous regions of the Southeastern United States. Used to hunt small game, these dogs were bred from terriers and hounds . [ 1 ] [ 2 ] These dogs became known as the Treeing Feist; feist is a derivation of fist and is a term used in Southern America for a small fierce dog.
The Cur and Feist breeds are smaller dogs, most often used to hunt squirrel and other small game. Over the two decades of the program's existence, UKC has developed World Championships for both Cur Squirrel Dog and Feist Squirrel Dog, [26] and holds licensed bench shows. [27]
The southern fox squirrel can vary in length from 20–26 inches (51–66 cm) and they can weigh from 1.5–2.6 pounds (0.68–1.18 kg). [3] They are about double the size of the much more common eastern gray squirrel. [4] The males and females are not sexually dimorphic and can be difficult to distinguish in the wild. [5]

The feist is not a new type of dog. Written accounts of the dogs go back centuries, with several spelling variations seen. George Washington referred to them in his diary in 1770 when describing a dog as "a small foist-looking yellow cur". [1] Abraham Lincoln wrote about the "fice" dog in his poem, "The Bear Hunt".
