The Koraiyar River is a river in the Ambasamudram taluk of the Tirunelveli district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.It is a right-bank tributary of the Thamirabarani River, which flows through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.

Kallanai (also known as the Grand Anicut) is an ancient dam built by Karikala of Chola dynasty in 150 CE. It was built (in running water) across the Kaveri river flowing from Tiruchirapalli District to Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India.
The dam has an effective storage capacity of 7,321,000,000 cu ft (207,300,000 m 3) with a full level of 119 ft (36 m). An area of 7,185 ha (17,750 acres) of land is benefited by the left bank canal and 100 ha (250 acres) of land is benefited by the right bank canal in Thandrampet and Thiruvannamalai blocks.
The dam was constructed by Kongu chieftain Kalingarayan Gounder. [2] It is one of the ancient River linking projects in Tamil Nadu and was undertaken to establish a link between Bhavani and Noyyal rivers. The project including construction of the dam and canal started in 1271 and was completed in 1283. [3]
Northwest of Needamangalam, there is another dam across the river, and the river splits again, into three branches. The Pamaniyar and Koraiyar Rivers begin as the two southern branches created by this divergence, while the Vennar continues through the northern branch.
