West Chester elementary schools were desegregated in 1948, thanks to the efforts of Charles and Unise Porter, the parents of African-American first-grader Gregory Porter. [56] The West Chester Normal School became West Chester State Teachers College in 1926. It again changed its name to West Chester State College in 1960.
