December 16, 2000 – MARTA opened two new rail stations – Sandy Springs and North Springs – on the North Line. October 1, 2009 – MARTA renames its lines based on colors instead of directions. February 2010 – MARTA agrees to rename the Yellow Line as the Gold Line in response to outcry from members of the Doraville Asian community. [52]
The following year, on June 26, 1993, Kensington and Indian Creek stations on the East Line opened. [1] This was the first time MARTA rail extended beyond Interstate 285. [4] In 2009, MARTA introduced a color-coded system of naming for its rail lines. [5] As a result, the former East-West Line became the Blue Line. [6]
Portions of what is now the Blue and Green Lines were opened between June 30 (Avondale-Georgia State) and December 22, 1979 (Five Points-Ashby), and are the first sections of the MARTA rail system to open. [1] [3] However, it wasn't until December 29, 1992 [1] that the branch to Bankhead, then known as the Proctor Creek Line, [4] opened.
