The Union Flag was founded in mid-1865 by George Edgar Grisham (also spelled Gresham), a white man who had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and previously co-published the Jonesborough Express. [1] [2] The first issue was published on October 13. [3] Subscriptions cost $3 a year. [2]
The flag was lowered by Major Robert Anderson on April 13, 1861, when he surrendered Fort Sumter, in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, at the outset of the American Civil War. Anderson brought the flag to New York City for an April 20, 1861, patriotic rally, where it was flown from the equestrian statue of George Washington in Union Square.
Since the beginning of the war had been the firing on and surrender ("lowering the flag") of Fort Sumter, in Charleston, South Carolina, the decision was made to ceremonially raise the Union flag over it. The original flag had been preserved as a patriotic object, and the occasion was one of the first celebrations of the impending end of the war.
