I don't know, but I just got a copy of Timothy B. Smith's The Real Horse Soldiers and when I work my way down the huge book list in my humble library to it, I'll know for sure. That being said, and me not being the most knowledgeable on Grierson's Raid, I'm pretty sure it didn't happen.

I have seen it a few times. A first rate movie, but I had read both of the novels, The Horse Soldiers and it's sequel The Cavalryman, both written by Harold Sinclair. I enjoyed the movie very much, and some of the props came from Bannerman's. It was a well made movie and entertaining.

Lyrics: I left my love, my love I left a sleepin' in her bed. I turned my back on my true love when fightin' Johnny Reb. I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
Working on a similar timetable as Brown but creating an entirely different animal was John Sinclair. His historical novel The Horse Soldiers was released several years after Brown's book, but the author apparently didn't use Brown's book as a source. Instead, he used many of the same sources Brown had used, including the Official Records.

For the soldiers, it was a staple that many of them had day in and day out (as long as the supply train was working), while for us it's become a rarity, even a luxury ingredient for some recipes. This was definitely NOT the case for salted or pickled beef, known derisively as "salt horse" by the soldiers. Most of us are familiar with salting ...
(I really can't blame the Union Trooper ... as those little boys were also trying to kill the Union horse soldiers). A few minutes after that scene, John Wayne orders one of his men to "spank" the young Confederate drummer-boy that couldn't keep up with the older guys. Such a funny part of that movie.
Horse Soldiers is a good movie, it has a ton of historical inaccuracies and John Ford's typical western movie style shows throughout the movie, but it's still a good one. I don't mind historical butchery too much in a movie, and in the era Horse Soldiers was filmed, trapdoor Springfield carbines, striped pants on every cavalryman, almost no ...
