In 1964, the year of his graduation, Rambo was a two-time NCAA High Jump Champion and won an Olympic bronze medal in the Tokyo Games. In 1965, Rambo was drafted in the sixth round by the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA, [5] but never actually played. Then injuries forced him from the professional basketball court for several seasons. He subsequently pushed the world indoor record to 7'1½" (2.17 m), and broke the world outdoor record three times, with a career best jump of 7'3¾" (2.22 m) in 1960, at the age of 19. Thomas' meteoric career briefly captivated the track world, but he failed to win an Olympic gold medal, despite being favored to win in both the 1960 and 1964 Games.
