On March 1, 1987, KGUD adopted the KMET call letters [3] to represent the Riverside—San Bernardino metropolitan area and Hemet, a community south of Banning. KMET aired a middle of the road format branded "The Mighty Met" in honor of the defunct Los Angeles rock station that previously held the KMET call letters (94.7 FM, now KTWV).

The station on 94.3 FM at Garden Grove signed on in 1961 as KGGK, later to become KTBT, KORJ, KIKF ("KIK-FM", a country music station), and KMXN [1] before finally KEBN.. On November 18, 1994, KEBN and KBUA, the other area station on 94.3 FM began simulcasting the same country music format and 94.3 in San Fernando became KYKF.

Previously when the team was in San Diego its main flagship was KIOZ. The previous Los Angeles flagship was KLAC/570, in Los Angeles and Orange County, which like KIOZ, KLSD, and several other Charger radio affiliates, is owned by iHeartMedia. Prior to that KSPN/710 was the Los Angeles affiliate and before that, KMPC/1540 for several years.
