Lee Vining Canyon is one of only two ice climbing venues in California. The Lee Vining Canyon provides the route for California State Route 120 (Tioga Pass Road), the main road crossing Yosemite. Due to the ruggedness of the area, the construction of the road along the sheer canyon walls during the 1930s was the most difficult part of the trans-Sierra crossing.
The highway retains that name as it travels through Tuolumne Meadows, over Tioga Pass at an elevation of 9,945 feet, and through the Lee Vining Canyon on its 59-mile (95 km) journey to its intersection with U.S. Route 395, at Lee Vining.
Tioga Peak is three miles north-northeast of Tioga Pass, at the head of Lee Vining Canyon. Highway 120 traverses its south and east slopes. It is easily accessible, a class 1 to class 2 scramble, from Gardisky Lake. The summit is like a rolling dome. It has some of the best views of the Tioga Pass region. [3]
The peak is situated north of Lee Vining Canyon, and 1.8 miles (2.9 km) southeast of Mount Warren, which is the nearest higher neighbor. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 5,300 feet (1,600 meters) above Mono Lake in less than four miles (6.4 km), and 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above Lee Vining Creek in two miles (3.2 km).
Though California is home to several ice playgrounds — including Lee Vining Canyon and June Lake — ice climbing season tends to be ephemeral. So go while you can.
