The college was originally the Bournemouth Municipal College which opened in 1913. It is a listed building and is known for its clock tower (said to be an 'eyesore' when first built). A public library was part of the building until 2002. A small number of 'Horsa huts' were built in the 1940s and a large three-floor extension opened in 1957.

As early as 1965, in the House of Commons, the number of students at the college was highlighted, and the Secretary of State was asked to consider a university application. [6] At the time the Government did not intend to create any new universities until the late 1970s,. [6] In the 1970s the college became the Bournemouth College of Technology.
The school changed its name to Rossmore Community College and underwent a major building program to reinvent itself. [3] In September 2003 the school became a sports college, one of two in Poole [citation needed]. On 1 September 2010, the school opened as St. Aldhelms Academy under the new Academies Act 2010.
