Dorset Mountain is home to the largest underground marble quarry in the world. The quarry is entered through the same opening that has been in use for over 100 years. The mine is 1 ½ miles deep, and this is where Danby marble is quarried. Vermont Quarries Corporation took over the production and operation of the famous Danby Marble quarry in 1992.
Danby quarry, located near the peak, [4] opened in the early 20th century and is likely the world's largest underground marble quarry. [7] It was reported in 2001 to have a total monthly output of about 1,200 tons of marble, half of which consists of Imperial Danby, a fine architectural marble with a variety of uses. [ 7 ]
The Vermont Marble Company was founded in 1880 by businessman and politician Redfield Proctor, who served as the company's first president. Marble was quarried from several locations in the town of Proctor, then called Sutherland Falls, and the surrounding communities of Rutland , West Rutland and Danby .

The town of Danby, located in southeastern Rutland County, Vermont, was settled in the late 18th century, and the area that is now Danby Village was settled around 1800. Originally less important than the more central Danby Corners area, it was the site of some of the town's early mills.
The Marble Street Historic District encompasses what was once the principal business district of West Rutland, Vermont.Centered on Marble Street between Thrall Avenue and Smith Place, this area was the town's economic hub during the years (roughly 1885 to 1935) when the local marble quarries dominated the local economy.
