The UCF varsity athletic program began during the 1969–70 academic year. Then known as the "Florida Technological University Knights of Pegasus", the university was a charter member of the Sunshine State Conference in 1975. [citation needed] Since the 1970s, the UCF athletic programs have become a major competitor in college athletics.

UCF offered its first program in Hospitality Management in 1983. The program was the outgrowth of UCF's Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies, which began in 1979. Dr. Abraham Pizam led the department from its founding in 1983 to 1993. Dr. Robert Ford served as department chair from 1993 to 1998.
The Nursing Program at UCF was established in 1978, [4] with the first class of undergraduate students enrolling in the fall of 1979. The inaugural class graduated in 1981 with their BSN degree. In 1982, the Nursing program received the designation, Department of Nursing. A satellite campus was opened at Cocoa in 1983.
The departments under which instruction and research occur are housed in UCF's other schools and colleges. The administrative offices for the College of Graduate Studies are located in Trevor Colbourn Hall, Suite 205A, on UCF's main campus. The interim dean of the college is John Weishampel PhD. [3]
