As part of the Fit to Fight program, the Air Force adopted a more stringent physical fitness assessment in 2004 and replaced the annual ergo-cycle (stationary bike) test that the Air Force had used for several years. [1] [2] Results are stored in the Air Force Fitness Management System (AFFMS) and accessible via the AF Portal. [3]
On 7 November 2005, BMT changed its curriculum to focus on a new kind of Airman—one who is a "warrior first". The goal is to instill a warrior mindset in trainees from day one and better prepare Airmen for the realities of the operational Air Force. The changes resulted from the need to meet current and future operational Air Force requirements.
The Annual Fitness Test is the same regardless of sex – all personnel have the same test regardless of age or sex, whilst the Personal Fitness Assessment is gender adjusted – service personnel have to reach a minimum standard in accordance with age group and gender – older personnel and females get more time. In 1951, Parks Air Force Base in Dublin, California, became a BMT center, with training beginning in March 1952. BMT at Parks AFB ceased later in the decade and the installation was transferred to the U.S. Army in 1959. For a brief time between 1966 and 1968, the Air Force operated a second BMT at Amarillo Air Force Base in Amarillo, Texas.

The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was a test designed to measure the muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular respiratory fitness of soldiers in the United States Army. The test contained three events: push-ups , sit-ups , and a two-mile run with a soldier scoring from 0 to 100 points in each event based on performance.
