"Firebird" is the twentieth episode of the fifth season of the American fantasy drama series Once Upon a Time, which aired on May 1, 2016. In this episode, Emma and Hook prove that they are truly in love, but Hook decides to stay in the Underworld; and Mr. Gold tricks Pan.
Unfortunately, just as they are about to enact the spell, Gold uses it on Emma's family. Emma goes to confront Fiona at the Mayor's office, but Fiona holds Emma's family hostage, save for Henry, along with Regina, Zelena, and Hook. Fiona taunts Emma by playing her the song from her childhood, which reminds her of a time when she was alone.
Zelena then has her first real bonding moment with her new baby. Regina asks Merida to keep an eye on Emma, only to have Hook appear in front of the archer and knock her out. When Emma asks Hook what he plans on doing, he replies by saying that since he was now the Dark One, he was a "free man" and now sought revenge on Mr. Gold.
Hook prepares for his first real date with Emma by making a deal with Gold to restore his missing hand in exchange for keeping Gold's secret about the Dagger that he gave Belle being fake. Hook discovers his restored hand brings out his dark side, and is forced into doing a favor for Gold to rid himself of the hand.
Hook says that Emma still has some magic in her and after seeing what happened to her parents and realizing everything Henry did to bring her to Storybrooke, she's ready to return home. Hook and Emma then notice the wand lights up with magic and open up the portal, allowing Hook and the woman to escape first.
Hook tells Emma that he will think of her everyday; she smiles and says good. Regina casts a spell that will give Emma and Henry a lifetime of good memories, but they will forget everything that happened in Storybrooke. As Emma and Henry drive away, Regina destroys the scrolls, the Curse consumes everyone, and Storybrooke disappears.
When Emma asks Hook what he wants, he says that he wants to help her, and asks who Nimue is. She says that Nimue doesn't matter anymore, and that it will all be over tomorrow. Hook asks why she needs the sword. Emma walks away and Hook says he knows she has reasons for doing this, and Emma tells Hook that she does, and that she's doing all of ...
Hook passes her a note stating that it's an address where she will find her answers. After Hook leaves, Walsh proposes to Emma who is shocked and says she needs time to think. The next morning, Emma hands Henry a permission slip for a field trip and finds Hook’s note which contains an address: Neal's former apartment.
