Cavtat (Croatian pronunciation: [t͡sǎʋtat], [3] Italian: Ragusa Vecchia, lit. 'Old Ragusa ') is a village [ 4 ] in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia . It is on the Adriatic Sea coast 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of Dubrovnik and is the centre and the main settlement of Konavle municipality.

Konavle is actually a narrow field located between the Sniježnica mountain and the Adriatic Sea, spanning the area from the coastal town of Cavtat to the Montenegrin border at Prevlaka. Other than Cavtat, only the southernmost village of Molunat is located on the coast, while the other 30 villages are in the hinterland.

Bukovac was born Biagio Faggioni in the town of Cavtat south of Dubrovnik in Dalmatia. While his mother was of Croatian descent, his paternal grandfather was an Italian sailor from the Genoa area who experienced a shipwreck near Cavtat. Like that he met a local girl Ana Kličan, Bukovac's grandmother, with whom he married and settled in Cavtat. [5]
