School-based health centers (SBHCs) are primary care clinics based on primary and secondary school campuses in the United States. Most SBHCs provide a combination of primary care, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, case management, dental health, nutrition education, health education and health promotion.
It was New York State's first state-run mental health facility, and one of the first of its kind in the United States. The building was closed in 1977, and is now used for records storage. [4] [3] [5] The McPike Addiction Treatment Center is a 68-bed inpatient facility. [6] The center runs a special education school for grades 4 through 12. [7]
While the building was built in 1931, the center opened in January 2004 at St. Ann's at 625 East 137th Street at this location. The MHHC clinic occupies 5,000 square feet and offers health care services including primary care, behavioral health, dental, family planning, patient navigation and other supportive services.

The earliest pioneer of SBFC was Alfred Adler, the Austrian psychiatrist who developed 30 guidance clinics attached to schools in Vienna in the 1920s. Through these guidance clinics Adler and his colleagues counseled parents and teachers (often both together in large meetings where both groups were present) on how to help children overcome problems at home and school.
