Lake Isabella was created in 1953 by a dam on the Kern River, forcing the town to move about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of the original site. [6] The Isabella post office, which had opened in 1896, operated at the new site; the name was changed to Lake Isabella in 1957. [7] The dam's reservoir also inundated the original site of Kernville.
The South Fork Kern River is a tributary of the Kern River in the Sierra Nevada of the U.S. state of California.It is one of the southernmost rivers on the western slope of the mountains, and drains a high, relatively dry plateau country of 982 square miles (2,540 km 2) along the Sierra Crest.
In Lake Isabella, it is joined by its largest tributary, the South Fork Kern River, which drains a high plateau area to the east of the North Fork drainage. [17] The 95-mile (153 km)-long South Fork rises in Tulare County and flows south through Inyo National Forest, turning west after entering Kern County.
